About Honesdale
Tucked away on the NE edge of the Poconos and less than 15 miles from the New York border, Honesdale is one of Pennsylvania's best kept secrets. The wide sidewalks and colorful Italianate architecture lend a particular charm to any stroll. The view of the lush Pocono Mountains at every cross street reminds that this picturesque town is surrounded for miles by PA’s pristine natural splendor.
Initially known as Dyberry Forks, Honesdale was founded in the early 1800s and became the headquarters of the Delaware & Hudson Canal Company. An engineering feat of its time, the 108-mile canal transported coal from the hills of northeastern Pennsylvania to New York City, but water wasn't the only element in this transportation network. In the 1820s, the "Stourbridge Lion" made its way from Great Britain to Honesdale, becoming the first commercial steam locomotive to make a run in the United States. You can still take a ride on the Stourbridge Lion today!
Honesdale truly is a 'Winter Wonderland.' In fact, the town’s snowy scenery was the inspiration for the popular holiday tune of the same name written by Honesdale native Dick Smith.
We hope you enjoy all that this beautiful town has to offer.
